OUR ORIGIN STORY
Looking back the concept of Origin of Now was bestowed within Franklin Tate since he was a child.
“My father always said, ‘One day you will make a wine so remarkable the world will beat a pathway to your door’,
We believe we have found this idea with these wines.
As Franklin grew, he has always been pulled towards the idea of creating a high calibre wine, although being unable to see the exact path, knew it was part of his legacy. Franklin believes through John Tate’s passion of the region, his unwavering support in what could be achieved, he ignited a drive inside Franklin that guides him to continue the exploration of the region and create wine without constraint today.
Miles From Nowhere and the Tate family hold giving thanks to those that came before them of high importance, which is why we think it’s imperative to give representation to our Origin story!
It all began with John Tate’s fascination with what the region could achieve on its own, without constraints, without altercation, instead relying on the natural structure of the fruit derived from the land as a pure reflection of the region. For those that knew him closely would say he was an innovator, an artist in many forms. When he planted his first vines 50 years ago, being the first person to plant Shiraz in the region, he began to experiment with varietals and expectations of what could be done. He would say “You might not know it yet, but I know what we are doing here is something incredible.”. In reflection, this guidance has led Franklin to exactly where he needs to be today, an opportunity for him to re-write his own story and show his undivided love for Margaret River wine.
To have true vision, one must stand on the shoulder of giants. John Tate may have been short in stature, but he was giant in the wine industry, and we could never have envisioned these wines without his shoulders to stand on.
In the conceptualisation phase of Origin of Now, we wanted to select a location that defines this collection, John Tate himself and his guiding principles. We selected the vine John Tate’s ashes were placed under, Row 10 Vine 2, of the Shiraz he was always fond of.
As we continue to develop our wines, each year we will select the best and most balanced fruit from our vineyards, which will vary year-to-year depending on conditions. So, we set our coordinates to where John Tate rests, a reminder of where we have come from and an inspiration for our future.
